A Note on Journalism and Values

Earlier this year, as part of a lengthy strategic review of IJNR’s mission, vision, and future, we realized it would be useful to articulate and codify our core values - the guiding principles that dictate our decision-making during programs, planning, and everyday operations.

As we look toward the coming years - years that will no doubt contain challenges to journalism, democracy, the environment, marginalized communities, public health and so much more - we vow never to waver from these tenets.

We’re sharing them here with you as a promise: We’re not going anywhere, and we will always do everything in our power to support journalists in the difficult, courageous, vital work they do every day.

IJNR’s Core Values

  • There is no substitute for experiential learning.

  • Public understanding of the intersections between society and the environment is essential.

  • Independent journalism is a critical pillar of democracy.

  • IJNR’s sole intent is the pursuit of better journalism.

  • Including a diversity of perspectives and historically marginalized voices is imperative to our mission.

  • The free exchange of ideas is critical to telling a story truthfully.

  • All operations will be conducted with integrity and courtesy.

  • Valuing and supporting our employees is fundamental to IJNR’s success.

  • IJNR editorial independence is critical to the integrity of our programs.

We’re proud of the work we do, and we’re grateful to support people whose work is so crucial to a healthy democracy. Please consider making a small donation, to help keep journalists’ boots on the ground, where the stories are.
