Klamath River Institute: Dispatches from the Road

The Fellows and staff of our Klamath River Institute convened in Medford, Oregon on Saturday, and have embarked on a journey through northern California to the mouth of the Klamath, exploring the impacts of upcoming dam removals on the region. Along the way they’ll meet with farmers, ranchers, scientists, policymakers, state and federal employees, NGOs, and representatives of the Karuk, Yurok, Klamath and Shasta Nations.

Take a peek at what the Fellows have been up to so far, and stay tuned for updates!

On Sunday, Fellows visited the overlook of Copco 1, one of the four dams coming down on the Klamath. Crews are currently drilling a tunnel through the dam that will be breached early next year. They also met with members of the Shasta Indian Nation near an important ceremonial site, and heard about hopes for reclaiming ancestral lands once the reservoirs are drawn down.
